Two more steps to end “marry your rapist” laws

We have some important news. On Wednesday, Lebanon’s Parliament voted to repeal law 522, taking the first step in abolishing laws that allow rapists to escape prosecution by marrying their victim.[1] However, there are two more provisions that must be repealed to help end forced marriage.

Sign our petition to call for an end to ‘marry your rapist’ laws in Lebanon.

‘Marry your rapist’ laws mean that many women and girls are forced into marriage against their will. No-one should have to endure this.

While the Lebanese Parliament has repealed one article of the Penal Code that allows this to happen. Articles 505 and 518 remain, allowing rapists to marry their underage victims and avoid imprisonment. We need these two articles to also be repealed to help end forced marriage in Lebanon.

Over 45,000 supporters signed our petition to urge the Lebanese Parliament to repeal these laws. Will you help us reach 60,000 signatures?

Call on the Lebanese Government to abolish archaic laws that put women and girls at risk of forced marriage.

The activities of our partners in the region and internationally have successfully brought attention to this horrific practice, and the Lebanese Parliament has taken note. We are proud to be part of this movement campaigning against forced marriage and hope you will join in.

In hope,

Joanna, Miriam, Kat and the Freedom United Team
